Here's some prospective on how we treat air passengers.

Not long ago I was traveling to China. I had brought my iPhone and my Kindle and had packed back up battery systems together with the cables for wiring.

Now, if you did an X-Ray of my baggage all the batteries and cable might look like the makings of a bomb. I knew that and I expected my bags to be searched. When I arrived at the airport in Hong Kong to change flights they sent my bags through the X-Ray and saw the cables and back up batteries.

A Hong Kong airport official came up to me. He apologized to me profusely but said he had to ask me a question. The question was: "We are not implying that you are of anything but a man of the highest and most noble character but we are humbly asking if you would give us permission to inspect the contents of your bag."

I said of course since I had nothing to hide. They then inspected the bag and back up battery systems and the like and concluded that nothing was amiss.

The official again came over to me to apologize profusely to me and to wish me a good stay in China which would be filled with good fortune and happiness.

What a difference a culture makes.
