Scott also proposed an Unborn Children’s Monument Commission. The bill would lead to the erection of a “monument on the statehouse grounds to remember all the aborted babies in South Carolina.”

Emerson once compared the complaints of the intellectual to seasickness, inducing idleness, rather than mitigation of the colossal wrongs of society, e.g. Indians, blacks, immigrants. We could add to his list, those victimized by the civil warriors. Emerson's senator, Sumner, confronted their violence, was almost killed on the senate floor, but lived to win an important victory.
