The best number commentator in the campaign was MSNBC's Chuck Todd, who actually explained what numbers meant and showed a deep and revealing understanding of the geographical variations of American politics. We live in a culture in which data has assumed an importance far beyond its limits. We think having the right number is all there is to it.
