Why do liberals spend so much time talking about something mean that Rush Limbaugh said and so little about how to get out of Afghanistan, restore civil liberties, find jobs for the unemployed, or help homeowners threatened with foreclosure? Could this be one reason that Rush Limbaugh is so powerful and that we can't get out of Afghanistan?

Rush has always been in the forefront of the propaganda effort to manipulate public support in favor of the US imperial adventures.
The willfully ignorant across the land suck it up and believe everything he says. Therefore, any and every opportunity that arises to discredit and expose the bloated gasbag for what he is ought to be seized and taken to full advantage.
Some questions and a different perspective from The Guardian's Bob Garfield:

"What does it say about the radio superstar Rush Limbaugh if he goes before his tens of millions of listeners and manages to coalesce the anger of women across the country? It makes him a feminist, right? It makes him, to borrow his own term, a "FemiNazi".
What does it say about the political junkie Limbaugh that, in a few seconds, he raises the consciousness of women from coast to coast, including Republicans and independents, in a way that the political left has failed to do for at least three years, causing a political nightmare for the Republican party? It makes him a liberal, right? It makes him a Democrat..."

Situation critical; very close to destruction; request immediate intervention; inequity factor is 1,000,000,000 [one billion] and rising; most powerful species is victim of bigpicture blindness; cannot see the overall situation; this species has technology and weapons capable of destroying entire planet 60 times over; please send emergency response team ASAP; code 10; need equipment for disabling uranium-based bombs; repeat: extreme inequity increasing exponentially, driving violence to infinity; planet could burn at any moment; species has very confused and imperfect ideas about work and wealth; self-destruction is rampant since reward and sacrifice were divorced; species lacks conscious perception of value of justice and of connection of injustice and violence; recommend you send 1000 indestructible teachers; species has driven itself mad; most unable to overcome inertia, many vulnerable to psychosis and panic mentality; obedience to custom and convention is solidified; submission to accepted ideas is extreme; sense of alarm at situation is extremely slight; recommend extreme caution; planet is worth saving, has some interesting lifeforms

Maybe because liberals are frivolous children who would rather not deal with their guilt in supporting a party (the Democrats) who are as guilty as the Republicans, re: the mess this country's in. It's a lot easier getting worked up about political trivia.
@momalot
Message received. Previous trans-galactic monitoring by Federation confirms your report. However, immediate response impossible this office. Minimal staff available due to recent budget cuts. Also, long weekend here. Large asteroid on its way. Will that work?
Everything is under control. While Left and Right rage over abortion, contraception, and gay sex, the power elite steal your rights, your liberty, and your assets from under your noses. Every talking head on TV and every radio blowhard works for the power elite against you.
Oh, Hazen - thanks for the laugh. I'm glad it isn't yet illegal to have a chuckle while we're saving the world. But hold the asteroid - it looks from the above comments like maybe at least 4 of us have grokked the bigger picture. Maybe we've still time to convince the rest of our species to get their priorities correct and get busy outlawing the overpay-underpay overpower-underpower that is killing us all and this pretty planet.
The infrequently asked question of them all: What was the very good reason we humans ever had to allow unlimited personal fortunes when contribution to work is limited by Nature and only work creates wealth?
"Could this be one reason that Rush Limbaugh is so powerful . . . ?"
No. Limbaugh would be powerful even if liberals weren't spending so much time talking about something mean he said.
After Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) suggested that Limbaugh "back off" on his criticisms of Boehner and McConnell (Limbaugh accused them of appeasement), Gingrey had to apologize to Limbaugh.
After then-Republican Party chair Michael Steele called Limbaugh's rhetoric "incendiary," Limbaugh attacked Steele for "seeing to it President Obama succeeds." The head of the National Republican Party ended up apologizing to Limbaugh.

That's power.
In 2009, Fox News wrote about Limbaugh, "The minority whip appears to be someone who has never won an election," and credited Limbaugh for ensuring unanimous Republican opposition to a proposed stimulus package.

That's a lot of power.
Limbaugh might just be the most powerful Republican in the country right now. If the country's most powerful Republican spends three days slandering a law school student, it should be news. There's no excuse for Limbaugh in this case, as it is impossible for a slip of the tongue to last for three days.
