OBAMA ACHIEVES MODEST TROOP REDUCTION IN WAR ZONES

TROOP LEVELS (IN THOUSANDS) TODAY & AT BEGINNING OF OBAMA ADMINISTRATION

LA Times - U.S. forces in Iraq will number 50,000 by the end of the month - a reduction of 94,000 troops since he took office 18 months ago. . . The number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan — 33,000 when Obama took office — will have nearly tripled to 96,000 by September, but a fact sheet released by the White House notes that the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will have dropped from 177,000 to 146,000 by the end of August.

Progressive Review - These figures ignore the number of troops that will end up being stationed in nearby countries. For example, right now there are 10,000 American troops in Kuwait but one never hears about it. And there has been talk of storing troops in other Arab countries in case they are needed back again. But if you add the Afghan, Iraq and Kuwait troop levels you end up with a modest 8% reduction in troop force.
